1 "The Mountain" (Wednesday, 9 p.m. ET, The WB)

Just when you think that every second of this trite drama is just a rip-off of
"The O.C." transplanted to a generic mountain location, the pilot throws in a
cheaply produced extreme sports montage to confuse and alienate you. Star Oli
ver Hudson wasn't a charismatic romantic lead in his brief run on "Dawson's Cr
eek" or on the justifiably short-lived "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star," but
somebody at The WB is convinced that eventually they can make a star out of h
im. Like the rest of the cast, though, he's constantly upstaged by the athlete
s doing stunts for him. How is it possible that this predictable, loud and inc
oherent mess is the best that co-star Barbara Hershey could come up with for a
paycheck? Somewhere there are some fanboys who are going to be irate that The
WB chose to program this instead of updates on "Dark Shadows" or "Lost in Spa
ce."
2 "Listen Up"(Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET, CBS)
"Center of the Universe" (Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. ET, CBS)

CBS' two new fall comedies star some of the most reliably funny actors in tele
vision history. Between Jason Alexander, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, John Goodman, J
ean Smart, Ed Asner and Olympia Dukakis, there should be enough inherently gif
ted actors in these two shows that even by accident, isolated bouts of hilarit
y should ensue. Instead, between the two pilots, there isn't a single laugh. N
ot a chuckle. Not a guffaw. Make no mistake, neither of these sitcoms is as sh
ake-your-fist-at-the-sky-in-rage unfunny as last year's "Whoopi" or "It's All
Relative," but the minimal returns from some of our favorite stars makes them
doubly disappointing. "Listen Up" needs to figure out why Washington Post colu
mnist Tony Kornheiser (whose life is the basis of the show) is so regularly wi
tty and Alexander's Tony Clineman so rarely is. The creative team on "Center o
f the Universe" needs to figure out what their show is about, because just try
ing to find laughs in a sane man whose family is insane is a swift route to anonymity.
3 "Commando Nanny" (Friday, 8:30 p.m., The WB)

Philip Winchester, who was to have played the title role in this alleged comed
y, broke his foot recently, forcing the producers to recast the part. That may
turn out to be not such a bad thing for him, because the show he was part of
is really not funny at all. King of reality TV Mark Burnett is an executive pr
oducer of the show, and it's based loosely on his early years in Los Angeles,
when he worked as a nanny for several families after leaving the British milit
ary. Once you get past the mildly amusing premise -- which provokes more of a
"Hmm, that's funny" response than actual laughter -- there's precious little t
o work with: He's an ex-solider! He's a nanny! His boss doesn't like him! The
teenage daughter is hot! The pilot was undergoing some fairly extensive revisi
ons, with another role recast, even before Winchester's injury. That's rarely
a good sign for a show, but even the folks from "The Swan" probably couldn't d
o much with this ugly duckling.
4 "Clubhouse" (Tuesday, 9 p.m., CBS)

The setup: Earnest teenager begs and pleads to do something extracurricular be
cause it's, you know, his dream. Skeptical parent, worn down by such hectoring
, assents with a sigh and the line, "Okay, but if your grades slip even a litt
le ... ." Schmaltz ensues. And man, does it ever in "Clubhouse," a relentlessl
y treacly drama about a 16-year-old kid (Jeremy Sumpter) who wants nothing mor
e in life than to be a batboy for his favorite big-league team, the New York "
We're Not the Yankees So Please Don't Sue Us" Empires. After getting the job,
our hero meets the Down-to-Earth Superstar, the Nervous Rookie with Whom He Id
entifies, the Arrogant Jerk Slugger -- who for some reason gives the kid the k
eys to his Ferrari -- and the Kindly Old Equipment Manager, who dispenses Sage
Advice. Our sage advice: Watch something else.
